According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 3 million nonfatal work injuries and illnesses were reported by private industry employers in this country in 2012. This represents 3.4 cases per 100,000 full-time workers. Of the 3 million reported cases, 2.8 million involved injuries as opposed to “illnesses”. Of the 2.8 million injuries, 2.1 million (75.2%) were in the service sector industries while 700,000 were in the goods-producers industries.
Public Sector employers reported 792,000 injuries and illnesses in 2012 representing 5.6 cases per 100,000 workers. The majority of injuries were reported by police officers and firefighters.
In the United States, there were 4,383 fatal work injuries in 2012. Pennsylvania saw 163 fatal injuries of which 63 were the result of accident involving transportation/motor vehicle accidents.
