DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — Ellen Greenberg’s parents continue to fight to change her manner of death, more than a decade after she died.
“We’re asking justice for our daughter. That’s all we want. That’s all we are fighting for and that’s what we need,” said Josh Greenberg, Ellen’s dad.
27-year-old Ellen Greenberg was stabbed 20 times in her Manayunk home back in January of 2011. The manner of death was ruled a suicide, and her parents have been trying to change it ever since.
Recently, the Greenbergs’s attorney, Joseph Podraza, submitted what he called new evidence to the Attorney General’s office. Podraza said the evidence shows some of the stab wounds Ellen suffered happened after she died.
“All this evidence we thought was overwhelming to change the manner of death and take a closer look at the case,” said Podraza.
That evidence included depositions from experts, including Dr. Lindsey Emery who is a neuropathologist who reviewed Greenberg’s case.
In her deposition, Dr. Emery stated there was evidence that there was no hemorrhaging in the spinal cord. At one point, Emery was asked if the lack of hemorrhaging was due to the fact Ellen had already passed away when the stab wound was inflicted, and she answered indicating it was. Earlier in the deposition, Dr. Emery mentioned it could be one of the possible explanations.
In a letter, the Attorney General’s Office responded and said, “after reviewing the material, the facts still support the Medical Examiner’s finding of suicide.” They said Dr. Emery misspoke during the deposition.
“She would have felt every single one of these stab wounds and they would have been painful,” Podraza said. “It was physiologically impossible for her to self-inflict all those wounds.”
The Attorney General’s Office said they also reviewed other information and depositions submitted by Podraza, but said in a statement to CBS 21 said: “the materials provided to our office in Dec. 2021 brought to light no new facts in this case. It is unfortunate that selective presentation of testimony led the public and members of the media to make false conclusions, but these materials did not change our investigative findings and we do not see cause for it to change the determination of the Medical Examiner. We have provided the family and their attorney a letter detailing our review.”
“Its terrible for us every day to have to live with this and that is what we live with. We can’t get closure, we can’t get justice for our daughter. We know she didn’t commit suicide,” Josh Greenberg said.
The Greenberg’s are continuing to pursue a court case against the City of Philadelphia to have the manner of death reversed. Currently that case is under appeal.
“Its terrible for us every day to have to live with this and that is what we live with. We can’t get closure, we can’t get justice for our daughter. We know she didn’t commit suicide,” Josh Greenberg said.
“We aren’t going to be grandparents, we’ve missed lots of celebrations with her. All we have is our memories,” Sandee Greenberg said. “And what would be able to help me lay my head on my pillow is to make sure that I did everything I could to pursue justice for her and hopefully wherever we get will help other people too.”
